Amos had a close and enduring relation to the monastery church in Naantali, which accompanied him through various stages of his life. It served both as a source of inspiration and the setting for his play Vallis Gratiae (1923), and his interest began with medieval church history, particularly the Bridgettine Order and monasticism. He also initiated vespers services in the church, that is, evening prayers with singing. At the same time, the church was a natural place to show to prominent guests, including King Gustav V of Sweden and President Svinhufvud during their visit to the president’s summer residence Kultaranta in 1936. A few years later, Amos paid for the doors as part of a renovation of the church.
