Bio Pony’s Screening of the Documentary Amos A

Kimitoön municipality is organising screenings of the documentary film Amos A at Bio Pony in Dalsbruk and Bio Fix in Kimito. The film portrays Amos Anderson and highlights his life, relationships and significance for Finland’s cultural life.

The enigmatic Amos Anderson (1878–1961) is an undisputed figure in twentieth century Finnish society. His life can be viewed from many historical perspectives, including his role as an art patron, his connections to queer life, theatre, the business world, the press, Swedish speaking urban culture in Finland and politics.

Coming from modest beginnings, Anderson amassed a considerable fortune which he used to help build Finnish society. In her documentary, Anna Blom examines different aspects of Anderson’s public life, but the film is primarily interested in the social yet deeply private Amos and his human relationships. “We know a great deal about Amos Anderson, yet he remains a mystery,” the film states at the outset.

A window into Anderson’s personality is opened through Gunilla Hemming’s play Amos A, which premiered at the Swedish Theatre in September under the direction of Kari Heiskanen. The film follows the rehearsals of the play, the actors’ reflections on their roles and the development of costume, makeup and scenography. Amos never married and had no children, and in recent years there has been discussion regarding his possible homosexuality or bisexuality.

The development of the play is naturally interwoven with archival material and expert interviews. Through images, the film also introduces Anderson’s homes on Georgsgatan in Helsinki and at Söderlångvik on Kimitoön, both now museums where Amos Anderson’s rich and multifaceted legacy lives on.
