Exhibition on amateur archaeology in the park
12.7.2023
The Stone Age settlement at Ölmosviken on Kimitoön was discovered in 2010. A first test excavation of the settlement was organised in 2017 and another in 2018. In 2019-2021, the settlement has been excavated with funding from Suomen Kulttuurirahasto “Mullankaivajat”.
A test excavation on 23-26 August 2022 was carried out as part of archaeologist FM Janne Soisalo’s doctoral thesis on the Kiukai culture and with the aim of locating the best excavation site for the upcoming joint Nordic amateur archaeological excavation camp NAU 2023 in 2023. The test excavation was funded by Föreningen Konstsamfundet.
The test excavation included 8 test pits with a total area of 9 square metres. About ten amateur archaeologists and students from Kallion lukio and Helsingin kuvataidelukio worked as excavators.
A photo presentation of the excavation is now on display in the park for everyone to familiarise themselves with.
You can find the presentation on the left outside the main building that houses the Söderlångvik Museum, next to the diversity planting The Plum Garden. Welcome to take a look!
