Forest Management with a Focus on Diversity and Sustainability

12.12.2025

Söderlångvik’s forest holdings are managed in a versatile way. Ecological, economic, and social values are considered in all actions. The annual harvesting volume is based on inventories and calculations. Harvesting methods vary: traditional thinnings alternate with continuous cover forestry and regeneration fellings. According to the estate’s forest strategy, no regeneration fellings are carried out near residential areas, such as close to Dalsbruk or Söderlångvik Manor. The estate also works actively to increase biodiversity. Wetlands are created, flowering trees are promoted, and retention trees are left to support biological diversity.

Söderlångvik’s forests are well managed, and forestry provides employment for local entrepreneurs. Timber is usually sold as standing sales, meaning the harvesting rights are sold to companies that process the timber further. Economic use of the forest also involves interventions in nature. Laws, recommendations, and all available information on natural values are taken into account. Some species require untouched forest and a high amount of dead wood, while others need sunlight and active management. The estate’s forests are certified according to FSC standards, ensuring sustainable forest use.

In late summer 2025, Söderlångvik Manor received criticism regarding planned fellings. In some compartments, species requiring special protection were found, and certain areas were considered to lose recreational value if harvested. The person who made the discoveries did not want to disclose the exact locations of the species. The estate maintains close and constructive cooperation with interest groups, and by mutual agreement, some compartments have been removed entirely or partially from the harvesting list. Söderlångvik has also commissioned its own nature inventory for the criticized compartments and naturally considers species requiring special protection in its operations.

Söderlångvik’s forests offer a variety of forest types. Long marked trails lead visitors to the scenic Purunpää or up to the Dalsbruk lookout tower, maintained forest roads serve eager cyclists, and berry pickers are sure to find their favorite spots. Our mosaic-like forest landscape has developed through forest use. This is something Söderlångvik will continue, along with all measures to strengthen biodiversity. Interaction between the estate and interest groups is constantly evolving, and we gladly welcome information, suggestions, and opinions. Through cooperation, we can make the best use of our forests.
